supports. As the article unfolds, Slater writes about how self-esteem used to be something thought to measure mental health, but researchers are getting away from that older model. She goes
on to cite Nicholas Emler as claiming that there is no evidence to demonstrate that low self-esteem is harmful, and cites the gist of the conclusion of several recent studies:
"..people with high self-esteem pose a greater threat to those around them than people with low self-esteem and feeling bad about yourself is not the cause of our countrys biggest,
most expensive social problems" (Slater). While this may be true, self-esteem is important for individual happiness and should not be discarded as an important concept in psychology. The author goes
on to elaborate on the topic. She had brought the point across that many school curricula are based on the fact that self-esteem is important (Slater). The article winds down
with the notion that people should not worry so much about self-esteem, but how well they do in life, such as in the areas of love and work (Slater).
In other words, if people can marry successfully and do a good job at work, they do not have to fear low self-esteem. Of course, what the author fails to
notice is that people who do well in the categories of work and love probably have high self-esteem. Although the author makes some good points in the course of
the essay, and it is true that there is too much focus on the concept of self-esteem in society, it is also the case that the elements of success do
include a good concept of the self. If people do not have self-confidence and think highly of themselves, they may hold back and not fully participate in society. Caroline Myss
