on the other" (Sherwood Anderson, a brief biography). This paper discusses his short story The Triumph of the Egg. Discussion The story is known as The Egg as well
as the by the longer title, but no matter what its called, its a little gem. In it, the narrator talks about his childhood on a chicken farm, an
enterprise his father started because his mother was ambitious for the family to succeed: "The American passion for getting up in the world took possession of them. It
may have been that mother was responsible" (Anderson). At any rate, she convinced the narrators father to give up his job as a farm hand, at which he was
perfectly happy, and try his hand at chicken ranching. And thus began the battle of the egg. The narrator (Anderson wrote the story but that doesnt necessarily mean that
hes the "I" in it) says that he grew up to be a gloomy man and that his personality should be attributed to the fact that he grew up on
a chicken farm. Of his life there and the annoying chickens he writes:" It is born out of an egg, lives for a few weeks as a tiny fluffy
thing ... then becomes hideously naked, eats quantities of corn and meal ... gets diseases called pip, cholera, and other names, stands looking with stupid eyes at the sun, becomes
sick and dies" (Anderson). The few that survive to mate with the rooster only serve to propagate the miserable species; the hen lays an egg, another chicken is born
