were forced to admire his courage and integrity. Historical Background Even those members of the public who are unfamiliar with history know that King Henry VIII developed a habit of
marrying and executing his wives when they failed to produce a male heir to the English throne. His first wife, however, Henry was intent on divorcing, so that he could
marry Anne Boleyn. The King was well aware of Mores views on this subject. Henry VIII consulted with More in 1527 on the possibility of divorcing Catherine of Aragon (Sylvester
PG). After a lengthy study of the matter, More told the king that he could not support his case (Sylvester PG). At that time, Henry VIII accepted this amicably and
told him that he would use other men when dealing with "his great matter" (Sylvester PG). Knowing Mores opposition to the divorce, Henry VIII still chose More in 1529 to
succeed Wolsey as lord chancellor (Sylvester PG). He was the first commoner to hold this post. This may have been at least partially due to the sterling reputation that More
was earning all over Europe as an author and intellectual. As time went on it became more and more apparent that a complete break with Rome would be needed before
