depression, where they may feel a sense of despair over their present circumstances. They may be going through a divorce, unemployment or a death in the family. While depression is
sometimes normal, and consistent with some life events, when the depression appears out of the blue, or does not go away, a problem exists. If in fact feelings are
persistent and overwhelming, then clinical depression is usually diagnosed ("Depression," 1996). While many depressed people, or those with manic-depression in a depressed state, often literally depress their activity,
the result is usually a negative inner dialog. Such behavioral issues often result in self- criticism for the inactivity which is ultimately causing the reaction ("Depression," 1996).
In addition to a negative self-perception are negative interpretations of events and a similar future view; thus, the person with the affliction has a distorted perception of reality (1996). It
is a vicious cycle in that the negative view which results exacerbates the clinical condition. Certain populations are more prone to depression, and it is thought that there is a
genetic component as well. Depression is treated with psychotherapy, mood elevating drugs, or both. Part of the problem with treating depression is diagnosing it. It is not as if depression
is difficult to diagnose. What is difficult is getting clients into facilities and to admit to symptoms. While some people with depression are in denial, or simply do not recognize
the symptoms, some do stay away from doctors because they feel they cannot afford treatment. It is in part due to the fact that people believe that they cannot afford
