treat. Hare (1993) explains that having psychopaths in the mainstream, and treating them in prisons, can actually make them worse. Group psychotherapy-something of which all prisoners must partake-can give the
psychopath a soap box, or a stage to try out new things (Hare, 1993). In other words, the criminal is allowed to use his manipulative tools in the group, and
so he is able to fine-tune his ordinarily methods of manipulation in the larger society (Hare, 1993). For the ordinary criminal who derives reinforcement from the larger society in terms
of how he is doing, motivation for committing crime or doing well, and so forth, rehabilitation can work. However, according to Hare (1993), the psychopath is very different and is
not easily rehabilitative. In fact, most experts claim that psychopaths cannot be treated as there is no effective treatment for them (Hare, 1993). While Hare looks at the psychopath specifically,
within that domain is the pedophile, and the larger society is well aware that pedophiles are resistant to treatment. The exciting thing about Hares (1993) work is that it provides
a sense that all of these individuals who may be considered psychopaths have a similar problem. They simply do not want to be treated (Hare, 1993). They basically do not
believe they have a problem. In most cases, people seek treatment because they want to change a behavior that does not work. Part of psychopathy is that these individuals have
their own views and they do not want to conform to society or societys method of treatment. They are happy as they are. In some way, one might compare the
psychopath to an addict. When someone is addicted to a substance, it is said that they are in denial about the addiction, something that is a part of the disease.
