characterized as "autism spectrum disorders." This paper lists these conditions and then, because it is a short essay, concentrates on treatment modalities for autism itself. It argues that behavioral modification
is more efficient than dietary changes in treating this condition. Discussion The "Pervasive Developmental Disorders" or PDD are "defined in DSM-IV by the American Psychiatry Academy" (Kutscher, 2006). Pervasive disorders
are those that spread across "multiple types of communication" (Kutscher, 2006). The five disorders are autistic disorder; Aspergers Syndrome; PDD-NOS; Retts Disorder; and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder" (Kutscher, 2006). The symptoms
of each are as follows. Autism is characterized by "severely disordered verbal and non-verbal language; unusual behaviors" (Kutscher, 2006) [emphasis in original]. Aspergers Syndrome is characterized by having "relatively good
verbal language, with milder non-verbal language problems; restricted range of interests and relatedness" (Kutscher, 2006). Those with PDD-NOS are associated with "non-verbal language problems not meeting strict criteria for other
PDD disorders" while Retts is a "rare neurodegenerative disorder of girls" (Kutscher, 2006). Finally, this group is finished with "Childhood Disintegrative Disorder" - a condition that, according to Kutscher, is
puzzling neurologists, who "assume psychiatrists mean neurodegenerative disorders" (2006). He also notes that both this condition and Retts Disorder are "considered medical disorders and are not usually considered part of
