Recent Trends in the Travel Industry In my studies of change in this unique industry, the need to diversify services being offered seems to headline the issue. Many travel executives now see themselves as being part of a transformed entity labeled the "tourism business." For example, popular bus companies such as Greyhound and Trailways have begun to provide major tourism and sightseeing services for our several charter operations and designated urban touring services as opposed to just running routine pick-up and drop-off services (Erlich, 1995). In Florida, people tend to go to travel agencies to charter a bus and not go to the bus company directly as is the case in the Northeast. Late in 1994, some bus companies began to offer airport transfer services and market those products through travel agents. Many agents who do not want to write a ticket for the smaller items, such as transfers that may only provide a $2.50 commission, still have begun to consistently refer customers. As much as this is a time of change for the bus industry, it may be more so for the travel agent industry because of declining commissions. Right now for most agencies, cruise lines are carrying the ball and airline-based revenues have not performed as well.
