Association said that the term "transgender" refers to "behavior, appearance, or identity of persons who cross, transcend, or do not conform to culturally defined norms for persons of their biological
sex" (Bess and Stabb, 2009, p. 264). Transgendered persons are fairly rare (their self-identification goes far beyond homosexuality; they may act on the need to change genders) but they
need to be accorded the same dignity and respect as anyone else. This paper explores some of the issues facing this community. Discussion We begin with a history of the
group. Its probably not accurate to say transgendered persons have a history as a group, since there can be no doubt that people like this have existed since the beginning
of time. What is new is the fact that they are now more open and willing to talk about themselves and their experiences. If gay scholar Martin Duberman is to
be believed, then scholarship and work in what is now called "queer theory" or "queer studies," which includes transgendered persons, is relatively recent (2001). Duberman got his doctorate in 1957
and was firmly "in the closet" at the time, but when he wrote in 2001, he no longer had to hide his orientation (Duberman, 2001). If we use his experience
as an example (he mentions lesbians and transgendered people as well as gays), then its a logical assumption that the movement for open discussion of transgender is a little over
