the poetry of Walt Whitman and the prose of Ralph Waldo Emerson is to understand some of the unique attributes and attitudes of each man. For example, Whitman is revered
as a one of the great contributors to the American body of literature despite the fact that he was not all that well-received by the average American of his time.
Whitman constantly asserts what he believes to be a pattern of life, death, and rebirth in the universe. Death holds no terror for him, because he believes that it
leads only to rebirth as part of an unending cycle. The result of such an attitude is what allows Whitman to honor the common man. As the student
researches Walt Whitman, they will see that he believes the so-called "common" man to be a noble part of humanity; and he finds no one, regardless of occupation or condition,
unworthy of being noticed and praised in the poetry he creates. As far as Whitman was concerned, all people, but more specifically, all Americans share a commonality of thought,
emotion, and intuitiveness. In general, his stream-of-consciousness writing is a perfect representation of the style that allows for long and apparently disjointed discourse on a series of ideas and
impressions that flow freely through a characters or narrators mind. The very persona of Walt Whitman is expressed through Emersons words: " I hope in these days we have heard
the last of conformity and consistency" (Internet source). When the student turns his or her attention to Ralph Waldo Emerson, they should make note of the fact that Emerson
also stressed the importance and uniqueness of every individual and encouraged people both through his writing and his lectures to rely on their own judgment. However, it can be
