Tragedy as a concept may be applied to a genre of literature and can mean any serious and dignified drama which includes a conflict between the protagonist and a superior force ("Aristotle" PG). The force may be destiny, chance, society, or God, to name a few possibilities (PG). There are of course others. In Macbeth, one certainly sees such elements. Of course, there are parts of Macbeth which are not tragic and those deserve attention as well. It is important to review the plot of Macbeth in order to understand its tragic nature. Lady Macbeth decides to plot a murder, which would effectively render her husband king. Macbeth himself is in on it, does the deed himself, but shows remorse. It is of course really Lady Macbeth who prompts him to commit murder. Further, Macbeth does not admit to his deed, even though he is remorseful. Instead, more die. He allows others to be executed because he acts cowardly. Much of this comes from predictions of three witches, and after the deaths begin, the witches make further predictions and render Banquo, Macbeths friend, a future threat to the throne and Macbeth goes ahead and has him killed too. But his decision would come back to haunt him in the form of Banquos ghost as well as more predictions by the conniving sisters who seemingly drive him mad by again threatening his crown.
