disasters entails a number of separate yet interrelated components. While prevention of disasters by the employment of sound aircraft and airport design, sufficient maintenance and inspection procedures, and the
establishment of Airport Emergency Plans are of paramount importance in preventing accidents, accidents still occur. To learn more about the cause and possible preventative mechanisms that could be enacted
to prevent future accidents emergency planners study the details of those accidents that have occurred. One particularly interesting accident is the January 2000 crash of Alaska Airlines Flight 261.
The first lesson that this crash has to offer is a lesson in emergency communications and how they interrelate with the
emergency plans that each airport has in place. Alaska Airlines Flight 261 was a McDonnel Douglas MD-83 departing from Puerto Vallarta Mexico. At 4:36 p.m. Pacific Standard Time
(PST) January 31, 2000 that aircraft crashed into the Pacific Ocean approximately eleven miles offshore of Port Hueneme (Ruppe, 2003). The five crew members on board, as well
as the eighty-three passengers were all killed on impact (Aviation Safety Network, 2003). The crew had radioed in a problem with the planes horizontal stabilizer trim shortly before the
crash and had been diverted to from its initial destination of San Francisco towards the Los Angeles International Airport (Ruppe, 2003). Emergency response was essentially limited to recovering the
bodies and as much of the plane as possible. Piecing together why this crash occurred, however, would take considerably more time. As
