within an established sub-genre of horror films, the "slasher" movie. By examining literature on this topic, the paper will establish that this film laid the groundwork for later films. While
admitting the films faults, the paper will argue that the slasher scenes generate a high level of suspense. Relying primarily on the review by Dustin Putman, the argument will
be made that this film is not one that relies on narrative, but is rather, as Putman suggests a visceral experience. In other words, it is not the characters that
stand out in this film, but rather the situations. Based on a true story that took place in Texarkana, Texas in the spring of 1946, the basic plot of the
film concerns the senseless and brutal slayings of local people by a hooded assailant who becomes known simply as the "Phantom." In particular, the analysis will concentrate on the
technical expertise of the slasher scenes as the focal point of the film and demonstrate that these scenes influenced future filmmaking. Annotated Bibliography Anonymous (2001, November 27)
