to grow and prosper. In the recent novel, "The Tortilla Curtain," T. C. Boyle presents the reader with images that are quite similar to those seen in John Steinbecks "The
Grapes of Wrath" as they relate to issues of immigration, although the immigration is different. The following paper examines how Boyles book presents us with similar themes to those of
Steinbeck. The Tortilla Curtain and The Grapes of Wrath As mentioned in the introduction, Boyles book and Steinbecks discuss different types of immigration. However the underlying theme in
the immigration and the treatment of the people is very similar. Boyles work examines the Mexican immigrant in a very "civilized" and "materialistic" world that is Southern California whereas Steinbecks
examines Americans from Oklahoma immigrating to California during the Great Dust Bowl/the Great Depression. In this we see that both stories deal a great deal with the realities of
California, a place that seems to be like no other. There is opportunity, or so people think, but much of the opportunity for immigrants of any kind involves field work
or migratory work. This is where the powerful social issues come into play. In Boyles work we see the main character is a supposedly liberal thinker who believes he cares
for people and through his eyes we are presented with the negative realities. He is really not that liberal, though he does somehow come to understand that it is only
because of the immigrants that people in California have food to purchase at the store. It is the immigrants who do the work in the fields and orchards that no
