in some way and find some balance in a complex and sometimes threatening world. It is the story of a white family, of some wealth, and how they come in
contact with Mexican immigrants who live nearby. Perceptions change and interactions create different problems, especially for the white man, the main character of the story, as he moves from a
presumptuously enlightened perspective to one that is perhaps more prejudiced. The following paper examines some of the cultural elements of this particular story. The Tortilla Curtain
The real primary character in this novel is Delaney Mossbacher. While there is also his wife and his son, and Candido and his family, the
primary focus is on Delaney because he is the white power, so to speak, of the novel. Written by a white author this essentially makes a great deal of sense
for that is truly the only perspective the author would have, from a personal point. And it is the character of Delaney who develops and changes, sometimes quite drastically, throughout
the novel. Delaney is a "naturalist working from home" and he likes to assume he is very liberal, enlightened, and open and
caring about people (Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2008). But, in reality he is just as narrow-minded and presumptuous as those powers he would perhaps despise in the world in general. He
is one of those typical liberals who likes to recycle, insists on it, and does what he feels is best in making the world a better place. But, he can
realistically only do that at some cost to himself and he does not like the cost. This sort of perspective is clearly presented in the very beginning of the book
