is a novel that illustrates one of the most controversial realities in the nation, and also illustrates a human need for family and security regardless of culture or ethnicity. It
is a study of two families, the two male heads of the families coming into contact briefly in the novel, as they live very different lives. The following paper compares
and contrasts the lives of these families, the Mossbachers (an American family) and the Rincons (a Mexican family). The Tortilla Curtain: The Mossbachers and the Rincons The Mossbachers
are very normal people, and they live a fairly normal life. They have more than enough money and they have the perfect American Dream life in many respects. There is
Delaney, Kyra, and their son Jordon. Delaney is essentially a freelance writer who likes to believe that he is open minded and cares about nature and people, no matter their
race or culture. Kyra makes the money in the family and is a realtor, spending most of her time away from home working. Their son Jordon is a very typical
American teenager. He has his television, his video games and his material stability. This family also has pets which are reflective of their wealth because, in comparison to the Rincons,
as will be seen, the Mossbachers have more than enough so they can afford to feed their pets well. The Rincons are a family from Mexico. They are in
the United States illegally, trying to achieve a better life than they had in Mexico. There is Candido, America, and their daughter Socorro who is born later in the novel.
They live in a canyon with scraps of building materials they have essentially taken from people such as the Mossbachers. They must hide constantly so that they are not sent
