The mass media has a tremendous degree of
influence in our modern world. As might be expected, most of this influence rests with the five biggest media moguls. These are AOL Time Warner, The Walt Disney
Company, Bertelsmann AG, Viacom, and News Corporation (Williams, 2006). These companies are responsible not just for much of the worlds electronic broadcasts but also its print.
Williams (2006) describes the top five multiconglomerate media corporations as "hydra-headed monsters" that have the ability to:
"influence governments, culture and the way we obtain accurate information about the world"
Gerald Levin, chief executive of AOL Time Warner, sees the power wielded by the media as potentially becoming more powerful than that of governments themselves (Williams,
2006). These are somewhat concerning views given that the ownership and control of each of these media moguls rests with the Western world. Most of this ownership,
in fact, rests in the United States. The corporate connections of these media moguls is impressive to say the least.
AOL Time-Warner, for example, is the result of a 2000 merger between two of the biggest media corporations in the world. This merger is particularly impressive given the diversity
