late twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first century that technology has made a major difference, in the nineteenth century also had its fair share of new technological developments
which drove forward progress, and it is these that are the subject of Daniel Headricks book "The Tools of Empire: Technology and European Imperialism in the Nineteenth Century". The book
looks at the different types of technological innovation and the way that in line with the human desire of expansion the development of technology may be seen as both a
driving force that facilitated the expansion of the empire. Headricks main argument throughout the book is that imperialism was enhanced through technological developments and without the technology the spread would
not have been so prolific. He argues there was the creation of a self sustaining cycle where technology fuelled expansion and the expansion fuelled the desire and motivation to develop
technology. As the technology also impacted on the motivation for imperialism, just as imperialism impacted on the motivation for technology. The use of both primary and secondary sources are
used throughout the book and the message if the interdependent link between imperialism and technology is demonstrated well by the East India Company and the development of the gunboats. The
East India Company was the first major purchaser of the gunboats, here there was imperialism before the gunboats were bought but the purchase of them was key the British Victory
in the Opium wars and as such enabled the imperialism to continue, as Headrick states; "in the case of the gunboats, we cannot claim that technological innovation caused imperialism,
