have sued manufacturers of many items where injury occurred which is why there are ludicrous warnings on appliances. For instance, a hair dryer might have twenty warnings posted such as
Do Not Take This Into the Bathtub. Because manufacturers do get sued for many things, it seems that they are cautious in their recommendations. At the same time, when it
comes to tobacco, the industry has generally lost the fight. Still, tobacco is legal and the companies continue to sell this legal product. Anti-smoking activists have taken many different approaches
to try to destroy the industry (Siegel et al., 1998). For example, one lawsuit filed in Philadelphia claimed the industry violated the civil rights of African-Americans by targeting them
in creating campaigns for menthol cigarettes (1998). The suit was based on an antiquated civil rights law which had initially been created to prevent the victimization of former slaves (1998).
The reason for the suit is that it notes that three quarters of black smokers prefer menthol cigarettes (1998). The suit continues to say that menthol cigarettes are
more dangerous physically as it allows people to smoke longer and inhale more deeply (1998). The suit alleges that tobacco companies specifically marketed menthol cigarettes to African-Americans (1998). This is
just one example of lawsuits that have hit the industry. Joe Camel is another. That infamous lawsuit suggests that children were targeted because Joe Camel is a cartoon. If this
