History Tobacco has become fully impregnated in world society. Tobacco, of course, originated in the Americas.
There, the indigenous peoples used it in a ceremonial fashion, however, and that use hardly resembled what it has become today. After its discovery by the European peoples
that explored the Americas, tobacco quickly spread around the world. One culture after another adopted it into their daily lives. Smoking became a habit because people quickly became
addicted to the life-threatening chemicals that are contained in tobacco. As is the case with most things of addiction, however, tobacco
use was facilitated by big business which quickly recognized the profit potential of the drug. The tobacco industry lobby became a powerful force in world politics and in the
everyday lives of people. By the twentieth century, partially thanks to the aggressive marketing tactics of the tobacco industry, tobacco was considered an indispensible part of our society. As
people became aware of the potential health impacts of the drug in the latter decades of that century, however, an opposing lobby arose. That lobby was the anti-smoking lobby.
Today, that lobby is in a constant struggle with the multitude of big business entities that constitute the tobacco industry.
