The Titan and Group Structure Research Compiled By - April, 2011 Remember the Titans (2000, directed by Boar Yakin) is a film that is based on a true story of a 1971 recently integrated high schools football team, located in Alexandria, Virginia, coping with and overcoming racism to win the state championship. Background narration explains that a white high school, Hammond High, has been combined with "George Washington High, the black school, to create one school, T.C. Williams High" ("Remember," 2000, p. 6). While it is undoubtedly true, as Roger Ebert writes in his review, that "Real life is never this simple," the film offers striking dramatization of how group development, dynamics and structure take shape throughout the narrative, as the team transforms from antagonistic enemies into a cohesive, bonded group capable of achieving mutual goals. There are five levels of growth that apply to group development and each of these elements are evident in Titans. The first stage is pre-affiliation, which refers to the stage in which members are "ambivalent about joining the group" (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2007, p. 320). This stage is extensive due to a number of factors, which all connect with racism. For example, Bill Yoast, a popular coach at the white high school, is told by the regional athletic director that, due to affirmative action, a black coach, Herman Boone, has been brought in as head coach ("Remember," 2000).
