decades pass and the play still remains relevant to many people, many cultures, and many generations. Despite the fact that some of the elements in the play may well be outdated, it is a play whose themes and dreams are timeless. The following paper examines some of the elements, or themes, that make Millers play relevant for all people and all times. The Timelessness of Millers Play "Salesman debuted in America at a time of transition and uncertainty. The Depression had lifted ten years earlier, World War II had ended four years previous, the population was increasing and the country was prospering, creating a reality that was greeted with tenuous optimism by Americans" (Houseweart). Audiences were, and still are, "moved by the universal, tragic figure of Willy Loman. Many identified with this defeated man, haunted by the hollowness of his life and in desperate search of his usefulness" (Houseweart). Another critic indicates, "The popularity of Death of a Salesman is timeless. Audiences around the world have been drawn to it, moved by its story of a longing for fulfillment" (1949: Arthur Millers Death of a Salesman). Even if we are unaware of the time period in which this play was written, these words present us with a very timeless quality and subject matter. It is also interesting to note that despite the plays relevance to American society, it was also a play that touched the minds and hearts of people all across the globe: "The show has had successful runs in China, Sweden and Spain. The foreign productions highlighted cultural distinctions, yet SALESMANs temporal qualities allowed the play to evolve into an internationally significant work" (Houseweart).
