society. Granted, those in power such as kings and lords and people of wealth had life fairly easy, though not easy compared to most of us today. And, for the
most part we gain much of our knowledge, or our beliefs, concerning Medieval times from literature, even Medieval literature. One such work is Beowulf which a poem of heroism and
bravery and honor. In the following paper we present an examination of what life was like during the times of Beowulf by using the work and other examinations of the
social structure of the day. Beowulf and Medieval Life Many elements in Beowulf present very real and very important issues during the time period. For example, Beowulf is
a man who is considered honest, trustworthy, noble, and essentially a hero. His qualities were the qualities that were expected of men of his station in life. They were also
qualities which many other men would liked to have ascribed to had they possessed his position in the society. However, even without his position men were expected to emulate such
qualities. As one critic notes, "The themes of the Beowulf text include courage, valor, good nature, kinship, strength, and victory against evil. Beowulf represents all of these good qualities.
In the battle, the dragon emerges as the symbol of evil and consequently exists as the monster of this encounter" (King). In this we see that the society of the
time expected men to be brave, to honor kinship roles which were essential to the survival of mankind it seemed, to be honorable, and to be generally likable individuals with
