The Tiananmen Square incident that occurred on June 6, 1989 in Beijing China epitomized the desperateness of many Chinese to attain
basic rights and liberties. Some 100,000 had gathered to protest the many injustices they were forced to endure (Barker 9). A massacre ensued as the Chinese Army mercilessly
fired on the protestors not just in Tiananmen Square but in the surrounding area. Unfortunately, this incident can be described as a turning point that failed to turn.
In other words, while the incident symbolized great change for China, the reality is that that change has yet to be achieved. The Communist Party of China still maintains
a stranglehold on China. The concept of political liberalization was a common one in China in the 1980s. The government, on outward
appearance at least, seemed to be making at least a small degree of progress during this time period. A Constitution had been implemented in 1982, in fact, in
fact that provided for certain freedoms for the people. These freedoms included the freedom of speech, the freedom of the press, and the freedom of assembly, association, procession, and
