on many different fronts. He begins his tale with a relatively simple quest, but the battle soon gives way to another and then he ends his life, as an old man, with a final battle. His tale is one that illustrates many things, not the least of which is that which argues a man who lives by the sword dies by the sword. In the following paper we examine the three battles of Beowulf, illustrating how one battle leads to the next and how Beowulf develops as a man through the battles. The First Battle In the beginning of the classic epic we note that Beowulf is not a citizen of the region that needs help. He is, however, a somewhat legendary character who is famed for his strength and his honor. He hears word that Hrothgars kingdom is in jeopardy because of a monster by the name of Grendel. At this point in time Beowulf lives in the "land of the Geats, ruled by Hygelac...Straightway, he set sail to free the Danes from the demons depredations" (Anonymous Beowulf: Summary beowulf2.html). From this simple beginning we can readily assume that Beowulf is a young and powerful man. He is eager to do battle when he understands someone is in danger, and perhaps also eager to gain some fame through the process. His character is somewhat innocent, but yet no less wise it would seem than an older man. He is not a stranger to battle and he appears to be a man of strong character as well. When he arrives and does battle with the infamous Grendel his strength is such that he is able to defeat the monster without any trouble. He reaches out to take the monster as the monster is working towards another ...
