being fought in different places for various reasons. In these wars much of what we know to be Europe was formed as powers crumbled and new powers rose in strength. It was a war that involved religion, politics, economics, territory, dynasties, and everything imaginable. The following paper examines the war and the various issues, such as religion, territory, and economics. The Thirty Years War As with any conflict that turns to war to solve the problem, there are realities or issues that led up to the war. We note that one individual, Emperor Charles V. had worked very hard to help the German Protestant community and the Roman Curia find some sort of balance. However, they were apparently both unwilling to really come together and perhaps simply accept one another. "Neither the Council of Trent nor the Papal Curia were willing to accept the Religious Peace of Augsburg" (World History at KMLA, 2004). Then, in 1608 the Protestant Union was formed, and then the Catholic League in the following year. In the same year Emperor Rudolf, who was the King of Bohemia, made a decree that eliminated the religious toleration of Protestants. At this poine the struggles between the Catholics and the Protestants were in a position that could perhaps only be solved through warfare. One author offers the following in relationship to what may well have set the spark that started the war: "In 1618 the Bohemian Estates deposed Emperor Matthias (as King of Bohemia) in the Defenestration of Prague. They went on to establish a Bohemian nobles republic following the model of Poland-Lithuania and elected Frederick Count Palatinate King of Bohemia.
