It is often seen as a very simple, and unbelievable book that is merely entertaining. Alfred Hitchcock was intrigued by the story and put it to screen, and thus seemed
to make this story become a classic in its genre of mystery/thriller. The following paper presents a general review of the book. The Thirty-Nine Steps In the beginning of
this story the primary character, Richard Hannay, who is also the narrator, is a man bored with England. The time period is just prior to the beginning of WWI, and
actually at the end of the book WWI has begun. Hannay is staying in a room in London and is incredibly bored. And suddenly a man shows up at his
door and wants to tell him his tale. The tale involves a conspiracy of intelligent anarchists who have been fighting underground and will ultimately destroy Europe. Later this man is
found dead and this sets the stage for Hannays involvement in knowing information, information that could lead to his death if he does not become involved. When he finds
this man dead he realizes that he cannot tell the police and he must leave for he believes others know that he has knowledge, if what this man has told
him is true. He then feels it is his duty to go to this one man, Constantine Karolides, who all hopes rests on apparently. Hannay thinks, "Somehow or other the
sight of Scudders dead face had made me a passionate believer in his scheme. He was gone, but he had taken me into his confidence, and I was pretty
well bound to carry on his work" (Buchan 20). The story takes him through many different trials and tribulations, adventures and risks, where he must lie and disguise himself,
