This paper discusses the film and answers specific questions about it. Discussion The thirteenth floor of the title refers to the fact that office buildings have no thirteenth floor. Well, they do, of course, but they number the floors from 1-12 and them from 14 to the roof, thereby making everyone feel better because theres no unlucky floor for anyone to have to deal with. Of course, since it doesnt officially exist, the thirteenth floor is a great place for people to hide, and thats what they do here. In this space that doesnt really exist, Douglas Hall and his mentor Hannon Fuller have created a virtual world; by "jacking in" they can go into the Los Angeles of 1937. Then Fuller is murdered and Hall tracks clues through both realities to try and find his killer-who might just be Hall himself. Its an intriguing film and the visuals are stunning, but the attempt to keep the worlds and the characters in them straight is difficult, because the same characters turn up in each reality. This is as it must be, because the process involves transferring consciousness between the visitor and the "unit" hes replacing. When one of the "units" in virtual Los Angeles finds out hes not real, he sets the rest of the film in motion. The questions are: what makes contemporary LA different from other virtual realities: Jane says that the Los Angeles that Hall lives in in 1999 is the only one of thousands of worlds that has actually created another virtual reality inside it. The ambiguous ending: Ambiguity means uncertainty, or that things can be taken more than one way. Did Butch Cassidy and Sundance really get shot down in Bolivia?
