freedom in sight. Today, many white people do not want to be blamed for what their ancestors did. However, a good number of black people feel that due to the
uneven footing blacks and whites had when the country was born, amends should be made. Affirmative action is just one attempt to make up for lost time. Several Constitutional amendments
were implemented to effect equality, but a question lingers in America today. Are blacks and whites truly equal? Sure the Constitution says so. But when housewife Susan Smith drowned her
two young children she created an easily accepted fabrication that they were abducted by a black man. America does believe that young, black, men are dangerous. This is an unfortunate
stereotype. In fact, a typical question lawyers ask jurors in order to decipher their level of prejudice is whether or not the person crosses the street to avoid the path
of a black man. Do they hold their pocket books just a bit tighter when they notice black people nearby? While there is often some truth to bigoted statements, fears
are usually blown out of proportion. Additionally, black men are often portrayed in film and television poorly which further influences ill feelings. One thinks of black men being unproductive as
well but there might be a reason for black men to have more idle time and not be as well dressed than white men in the same age category.
Curtis Skinner reports that an astonishingly high rates of black male joblessness characterize large northeastern cities in the America today (47). The problem of unemployment and idleness for black men
has worsened dramatically over the past three decades, particularly for men under the age of 24 (47). Researchers link a multitude of social ills, including crime and poverty to joblessness
