a clear end. It is rather a combination of the two. And, as one author notes, "Too many of our stories skirt the reality of war to provide us with
a moral or a hero. Not so with the fiction of Tim OBrien, a Vietnam vet" (Fox 58). Through his book we see many different characters, in many different situations,
coming to grips with war, and growing up in a war. The men we see were once simple young boys or men who found their way into Vietnam, for whatever
reason. And, while they experience the Vietnam War they grow, perhaps beyond their years. In the following paper we examine OBriens book and provide various illustrations of how the boys
go from boys to aged men. War and Age There can be little doubt that war ages a man, no matter how young or old. The idea of
having to kill is one that is not truly understood until it is experienced. To say one will fight for their country and fight for freedom is one thing. To
actually do it is something else. Ideals and actions are two different things. And action will always bring consequences of one kind or another. In the case of the Vietnam
War, and OBriens book, the consequence of war was, in many cases, age. As we shall see, these young men experienced things they never dreamed were possible in a real
world. As simple young men, with only ideas and imagination, they came into a land and a war that was far beyond their comprehension. They were not prepared for what
they saw, what they did, or what they felt. And, in the end, they were all made into men who were aged beyond their physical years. In all honesty, these
