the audience wondering just how much of the story is actual and how much is a product of the authors imagination. Representative of OBriens inherent literary style, he utilizes
meta-fiction as a means by which to incorporate the integral process of writing with that of the story line itself. Without question, it can be argued that the authors
intent is to focus as much on the writing process as it is to emphasize the imagery of war. "Im forty-three years old, and a writer now. Much of
it [the war] is hard to remember. I sit at this typewriter and stare through my words and watch Kiowa sinking into the deep muck of a shit field,
or Curt Lemon hanging in pieces from a tree, and as I write about these things, the remembering is turned into a kind of rehappening" (OBrien PG). The characters of
The Things They Carried are particularly associated with OBriens previous attempts at establishing a symmetrical ambiance throughout his works. One cannot read this tale without immediately recognizing the importance
of camaraderie; indeed, if there is one aspect that is driven home more than any other, it is the essence of humanity and its necessity in order to survive.
