It is the story of two young English girls sent off for their protection during the war and the story of their magical exploration of a forest wherein they find the thing that is dangerous and likely symbolic of mankind or the horrors of real life. The girls in the story, Penny and Primrose, are essentially the opposite of one another, and so cling to one another both in childhood and abstractly in their later years when they return to that dark forest and the thing. The following paper examines the development of the character of Primrose in The Thing in the Forest. The Thing in the Forest by A.S. Byatt In the beginning of the story the two girls are on a train, heading for a place they have no knowledge of. They are perhaps frightened. They are both young girls whose mothers sent them away without adequate explanation and they both perhaps feared they were bad girls and that is why they were sent off. However, since they see that the other is a nice girl they begin to assume that may not be the case. In essence, they are simple girls, girls with skinned knees, who have absolutely no understanding of the world around them. Primrose, the chubbier and blonder of the two, is an average girl, like Penny, and she really has no concept of the war that is going on and why she was sent away, not comprehending she was sent away for her own safety. Her worldview, as well as Pennys, is young and innocent and without depth. When the two girls arrive at the place they will be staying they ultimately end up going out into the forest one night.
