a primary method of treatment. Counseling as a form of therapy is a preferable form of treatment for a wide variety of reasons. First, and perhaps the most important, is
that it is the least invasive form of therapy available. The patient does not have to undergo a perpetual barrage of daily medicines, nor something as risky and traumatic as
surgery. Secondly, counseling allows the individual patient to truly feel as if he or she is an integral part of his or her recovery process; the concentrated effort of forming
a relationship with a counselor and then finding relief through the counseling process is more self-involved than simply taking a pill, and patients gain the confidence to face their problems
with an entirely new perspective. Of course, these values of counseling are only truly worth considering if the discipline of counseling as a whole has true therapeutic merit. This paper
shall explore the therapeutic merit of counseling by identifying the fundamental psychological concepts associated with counseling, and the various therapeutic approaches utilized to bring those concepts into practice. This
paragraph helps the student begin to describe the underlying psychological concepts involved in this therapeutic approach to counseling. Counseling has therapeutic value primarily because it is built upon a foundation
of solid psychological premises and ideas. It is these ideas which provide the structure and direction that causes counseling to differ from mere casual talking. These concepts are used in
counseling practice to explore the problems inherent in patients lives, so that the counselor can help the patient examine those problems and ultimately find relief from them. One of the
