Essay / Research Paper Abstract
5 pages in length. Social theory has long attributed animals to being a life-altering component to otherwise traditional approaches. It has been acknowledged for some time now that they possess an inherent quality that encourages people to express their most suppressed emotions when they would not do so with any other human being. Animals are cornerstones of strength during the most difficult times in life, offering silent support with no strings attached. Indeed, as much as an individual might nurture a therapy animal, the animal provides just as much emotional nurturing in return. At-risk youth and the elderly, two separate populations that often feel the rest of world has given up on them, take solace in the company of animals. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

they possess an inherent quality that encourages people to express their most suppressed emotions when they would not do so with any other human being. Animals are cornerstones of
strength during the most difficult times in life, offering silent support with no strings attached. Indeed, as much as an individual might nurture a therapy animal, the animal provides
just as much emotional nurturing in return (Hall et al). At-risk youth and the elderly, two separate populations that often feel the rest of world has given up on
them, take solace in the company of animals. "Pets link us to nature and to our evolutionary roots. There is, somehow, in our cultural mind, a yearning for
animals because we come from a symbiotic relationship with nature. Its in our cosmic consciousness because of our agrarian and hunter-gatherer societies. Its only in the last 50
years that we evolved into an industrialized nation cut off from animals" (Kelleher B01). In this day and age of ever-increasing technological
advancement, there are still some things that cannot be improved upon, such as the inherently beneficial relationship between pets and the elderly. There is no question that animals offer
unconditional love and support, which is what most people desperately need when living out the rest of their lives in residential or nursing homes. While this intrinsic bond has
long been recognized, it has not been put to medicinal use until quite recently with the advent of therapy animals and in-house pets. Crawford et al note that not
only because of the "remarkable success stories but because of an ever-growing body of research documenting the benefits of therapy animals, smart health management teams are acknowledging this value."
