that Deborah had been mentally ill for some time, but her parents lack of acknowledgement and shame kept her from the treatment she certainly needed. The stigma of being mentally
ill would be too much for Deborahs family to bear. Greenberg (1989) writes: "Yet with the terror connected with the hedged-about, circled around word crazy, the unspoken word that Deborah
was thinking about now, there was a light coming from the doctors spoken words, a king of light that shone back on many rooms of the past" (p.24). This was
an "aha" moment for the patient. There was a reason for all of the turmoil that would plague Deborah all of her life. While the family ignored the problems, this
is something not unusual. Boyd (2005) reports that there is often denial associated with mental illness by family members. This is largely due to the stigma attached to psychiatric conditions
(Boyd, 2005). In building a working relationship, Deborah first makes some effort by actually speaking in English as opposed to the language she had created in her internal and
fictitious world. This may be viewed as a stepping-stone to sanity. However, Deborah begins to open up even more after the doctor appears sympathetic toward Deborah in terms of her
feelings of being treated badly by the community. Deborah is taunted for being Jewish and these are feelings that were not well accepted by her family. The fact that Dr.
Fried shows sympathy seems to strike a chord in Deborah. It is important for Deborah to know that someone else cares. Her own family was rather aloof and blamed
her for her feelings about her younger sister. It seems as if the therapeutic relationship between Dr. Fried and Deborah was successful mostly because Dr. Fried was genuinely interested in
