Von Huben 8/2010 Please Introduction Why do human beings function as they do? This question has been debated by psychologists, research scientists and philosophers for many years. This paper looks at five philosophical positions that can be used to explain the ways in which human beings function, and it argues that existentialism, of the five alternatives presented, makes the most sense. Discussion The problem of human nature, particularly contemporarily, is that it is assumed that there exists one paradigm of human nature, one particular set of characteristics that all humans share that leads everyone to act, think and feel the same way about all human endeavors. We tend to develop norms of behavior based on the idea that everyone reacts the same way in every situation, which of course is untrue. The idea of a "one size fits all" pattern of human behavior is particularly problematic today, when society is not only more complex than ever before, but also spans the entire globe. This paper defends the idea that existentialism is the best way to understand human nature because it is inclusive of several of the other concepts including dualism. (This may be seen as a brilliant idea or hedging ones bets, depending on ones viewpoint.) But according to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, the existentialist argues that to understand human nature we must go beyond Descartes idea of dualism or the physicalists thinking that humans can be "adequately explained in terms of the fundamental physical constituents of the universe" (Crowell).
