what we know? These are riddles that are still begging for answers, and which may remain forever unsolved. This paper is not likely to solve this fundamental problem either; what
it does do is discuss the theory of knowledge and the ideas of death, the meaning of life, the concept of body and soul, and how they are described in
both the Socratic and Taoist traditions. Discussion Well turn first to the Greeks; specifically, the Crito and Platos Apology. Socrates himself left nothing written, so we have to depend on
Platos records of his great teachers methods and dialogues to understand the Socratic perspective. In the Apology, Plato describes the way that Socrates answered his accusers at his trial. Among
the charges were that Socrates was an atheist, and was trying to convince the youth of Athens that the gods did not exist; in essence, he was charged with corrupting
them. He made an eloquent defense, finally getting his accusers to admit that everyone was improving the lives of the young people with the single exception of Socrates, which
of course is absurd (Plato, the Apology). When his accusers persisted and asked him if he wasnt ashamed of living a life that would lead to an early death, he
said, "... a man who is good for anything ought not to calculate the chance of living or dying; he ought only to consider whether in doing anything he is
doing right or wrong - acting the part of a good man or of a bad" (Plato, the Apology). As an example of what he considers this type of man
he discusses Achilles, one of the heroes of Homers epic poem the Iliad, and what he said and did when he mother warned him that if he avenged his friend,
