that of Arabic literature. The work of Najib Mahfuz may be seen as rectifying some of these disregard with the winning of the Nobel prize for literature (Allen, 1997).
The work of Mahfuz has developed though different stages that also reflect the development and evolution of Arabic literature. However, whilst undertaking this evolution, leading from the formal prose style
writing to a more modern method of writing that manages to blend the older traditions and the modern language, there is also the reflection of many themes that are of
relevance to the society at the same time as retaining the required artistic aspects of the written word. The themes include those of locality, political structure of society and
the family. By looking at the work of Najib Mahfuz, especially with the Cairo Trilogy, these characteristics can be seen. The current development of artistic styles can be seen
as dating back to the mid nineteenth century. The al-nahdah, also know as the revival, sees the revival by authors of earlier formats, with the use of narrative in the
form of prose and the popularity of short picturesque stories, known as the maqamah became popular (Allen, 1997). This also has the characteristics of critiques modern society and this
can be seen strongly in the style of Mahfuz and the way in which he presents his stories, with the geographical emphasis as well as the critique that is seen
of the way in which Egyptians and Egyptian society were impacted by the British occupation during the nineteenth century (Allen, 1997).
