The theme of revenge is a common element in many of Edgar Allan Poes horror stories. Just as Poe was preoccupied with death,
disfigurement, and the darker aspects of the universe, so too was he preoccupied with the theme of revenge. Revenge is, in fact, one of the basic elements of the
deep emotion which characterizes Poes work. Unlike some authors of his time, and indeed even more so of our contemporary times, Poe only rarely allows his emotion to escape
its binding to appear raw and uncut on the page for all to see. When he finally unleashes the intensity of his revenge in such tales as "The Cask
of Amontillado", however we see the true depths to which Poes emotion can run. Indeed, this emotion is two-faceted, it is not only the emotion which is apparent as
someone is tormented or gruesomely murdered, it is an emotion which is much deeper in its nature. Poe uses this more subtle approach to emotion to balance his macabre
work. "The Cask of Amontillado" is exemplary in this regard. It could be contended that "The Cask of Amontillado" centers more around
the theme of revenge than do any of Poes gruesome works. "The Cask of Amontillado" is particularly captivating in regard to the theme of revenge in that, although revenge
is an ever-present element, it is masked and kept just below the surface by Poe. In many respects Poe is a much an expert at this type of utilization
