In embarking on the study of two famous works-- Suetoniuss The Twelve Caesars and Machiavellis The Prince--a sense of power is replete throughout both. In real life, one has to notice that to be in charge of other men, one has to have an intrinsic sense of power and it may also be argued that charisma is also essential . Indeed, the men who possessed power in the infamous named works also had charisma and while power was essentially a theme for both, the charismatic elements in each is substantial. First, what is charisma exactly? It is really a term hard to define, but it is the type of thing easy to spot when one is familiar with the concept. Simply stated, by virtue of attractive personality characteristics, a man or woman acquires authority because the people believe in his or her extraordinary capabilities as a leader. Thus, in order to rule, someone with charismatic authority need not be elected or born into a position. They simply need to win the confidence of the people. Dictators and cult leaders are usually endowed with the gift and come to power this way. Thus, candidates with charisma shine. Many people are likely to vote for them, even though another candidate is more qualified. Suetonius writes in the Twelve Caesars something akin to Primary Colors. Suetonius in fact serves as something of a mole. To be a fly on the wall of Julius Caesars home could be exciting and the author does take the reader into the realm of the emperors. He also reveals personal tid-bits of information that many would think are secret and so the book makes for a rather interesting read.
