This is a 5 page paper discussing the theme of freedom in “The Scarlet Letter”. Written in 1850, during a time when independence was at the forefront of the minds of Americans, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Scarlet Letter” tells the tale of an oppressive and restrictive society which condemns independent thought. Hester Prynne, as the main character in the novel displays great dignity and free will while being condemned by her community as an adulteress. Rather than submit to their pleas to tell of her lover, Hester chooses silence as an expression of her strength and expression of her freedom of will.

characters in the novel yearn for a freedom of sorts as Dimmesdale wants to escape from his guilt and Chillingsworth becomes obsessed with revenge. Pearl, Hesters daughter is a true
image of freedom as she is a child conceived freely from Hester and she is a free spirit wearing bright colours while those around her are dressed in black.
During the "The Scarlet Letter", Hawthorne took the Puritan doctrines of the time and set about to write a psychological drama filled with oppression,
guilt, sin, pride and the quest for freedom and free will. Using powerful symbolism he showed how the Puritan thought in the novel had an underlying dark side and as
expressed in the dark and oppressive clothing they wore and Hesters dark hair and the dark forests being things and places which represented sin (Barna 324). Hawthorne was aware
of the Puritan ideal that humans born into the world had a tendency to sin and he went on further to theorize that the human subconscious was actually what controlled
humans like puppets on a string with no means of escape (Barna 324). The story of Hester and her daughter Pearl begins with Hester on a scaffold holding her
