man raised in a quaint Methodist town, but when he comes back he is a new person. He cares little about religion. Instead, he does everything he was not allowed
to do before he left. War had taken all of his convictions away it seems and the fear of death also appears to have permeated the soul of Krebs. In
OBriens How to Tell a True War Story, there is a focus on a particular story as well as all the contradictions that make up the war and the stories
that follow. For example, they are all true but none of it is true. That is a typical observation that the author will make. What happens? What does not occur?
So many things are a part of the telling of war stories that one is inclined to wonder exactly what the author is trying to say. Each of the stories
on war however demonstrate the idea that war is devastating. War is something that puts fear into a person, and this is a fear that never leaves. The idea
that fear is entrenched in both fictitious works is seen in the Hemingway piece in that this one mans entire life, and purpose, changes due to his experience in war.
In OBriens work, similar elements are shown, but not in terms of how war affects one life. Rather, there seems to be a similar devastation in respect to all who
return to ordinary life with war stories. The tone of the Hemingway piece is rather sad and pathetic, while the OBrien story is more upbeat. There is no despair in
the latter, even though the point that war and fear are inextricable is made. Voice is relayed strongly in How to Tell a True War Story as this first person
