highlights the complacency and lack of depth that define many family relationships and exposes the sadness that is inherent to this situation. In this way, Miller suggests that many families are simply mechanisms by which we avoid the truth of our own realities. This theme is apparent in the many familial relationships of Willy Lowman. For instance, in the beginning of the story, the author flashes back to a time when Willy was loved and adored by his wife and children, and he was successful in his job as a salesman. However, what becomes notable about this situation is the fragility of Willys circumstances. More specifically, these relationships of Willys all become riddled with complacency, scorn, disappointment, etc. which brings Willy to a point in his life that he is consumed with regret, resentment, fear, and self-loathing. The problem with trying to imbue this play with the aura of tragedy is not that Willy Loman is a little man, its that hes not a good man : hes not much of a salesman; he cheats on his wife; he lives vicariously and unfairly through his eldest son, Buck, then makes excuses for that sons pathological misbehavior; he virtually ignores his second son; hes a real bastard to friends, neighbors and extended family; and so on (Brothers Judd, 2004). Willy actually becomes so disenchanted with his reality that he tries on several occasions to kill himself. Linda states that he does this by crashing the car.
