man and his desire to catch a fish and bring it back to his village. It is a story about community, ageism, youth, dreams, determination and pride. The following paper examines the theme within this novel. The theme is that a man can be destroyed but not defeated. The Theme Within The Old Man and the Sea by Hemingway In the story of this old man it is perhaps important to understand that he is not destroyed but that if he were it would not have meant defeat for the man. In fact it would have meant some sort of victory despite its outward appearance as defeat. One author notes, in fact, how it is a "story of an old fishermans journey, his long and lonely struggle with a fish and the sea, and his victory in defeat" (Nobelprize.org). In this one can see that defeat is a very powerful theme of the story. But, at the same time he is not defeated, and surely not destroyed. The old man, Santiago, is a man who has gone "eighty-four days...without taking a fish" and this made him something of an unlucky individual in his village. But, that did not deeply discourage him, although it did pressure him to decide to go out on his own and catch a fish so that he was not unlucky any longer. He is also a very old man. In these respects one could say that life had defeated him, as well as luck. But in truth he was not to be defeated by such things even if they destroyed him.
