been different models developed to encourage private investment to encourage the economic development of areas, with private investment often being attracted by a commitment to investment by government and the
understanding of the potential this can create. There opinions that both support and criticise these types of projects. However, if we look at one of the largest; the Thames Gateway,
there are arguments that this can be used as a model to show how successful public private partnerships. The Thames Gateway was identified as a development area as a
national priory in RPG 9 (Regional planning guidance for the south east). The area runs fir 40 miles along the Thames starting at the Docklands and ending in Essex at
Southend and Sheerness in Essex (ODPM, 2005). The vision for the area was set out in the 2003 Sustainable Communities Plan document
and then built upon in subsequent documents (ODPM, 2005). The results of the development were projected to be the creation of a further 120,000 homes in the area
by the year 1026 this is an increase of 40,000 on the plans at the time of the plan (ODPM, 2005). Job
creations was expected to result in an increase of 180,000 jobs across the entire area. There was also the desire to create local communities tat were sustainable and had good
local facilities. Education and job skills were also targeted with the aim of creating a more skilled workforce and shifting the areas of education and skills acquisition to industries that
