this particular film was a clear alternative to horror films of the time, it was a groundbreaking film for its genre and thus offers the viewer, with a discerning eye,
a new appreciation for horror films. The following paper examines this film, discussing why it is an alternative film, and what makes it a unique film of its genre in
relationship to its time period. Texas Chainsaw Massacre Perhaps first and foremost we should discuss the term "alternative." When using this word it often means that something is
the alternative to something else. This film came out at a time when horror films were not unknown, and it also used techniques, such as suggesting violence, that had been
used before. As such one could not necessarily say it was an alternative for there were films similar to it at the time. However, in this case, the argument is
that "alternative" means that this film branched off into new territory, presenting a new and innovative direction for horror films. It is not a film that could be considered "alternative"
by todays standards because almost everything this film did, has been done over and over since. The paper, therefore, focuses on how this film deviated from the norm and presented
an alternative horror movie for the time period in which it was made. The story of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre is not necessarily a very deep or unique one,
