The following reflection on the Ten Commandments considers each one and the manner in which it continues to guide contemporary society, as well as its relevant importance to individuals. After verse 6, in which God identifies himself as "the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery," the first commandment is that "Ye shall have no other gods before me" (New International Version, Deut. 5:7). The next several commandments elaborate on this theme, indicating the place that God should have within the framework of society. These commandments include not worshiping any of the presumed deities of pagan religion (Deut. 5:8-10), not misusing the Lords name (Deut. 5:11) and the injunction to keep the Sabbath holy (Deut. 5:12). Commandments 1-3 provide the authority that ensured compliance in ancient society. The fourth commandment, to keep the Sabbath, as a holy day of rest, provided surcease from the toil of daily existence in early human society. This gave the opportunity for reflection and worship, but also a time for familial bonding and reconnection. Carrying this theme forward, the next commandments lay the foundation for civilized society. The first of these social commandments is to "Honor your father and your mother" (Deut. 5:16). The main means of socialization for children since the dawn of humanity has been the family, as children learn about their society, its codes of conduct and norms from their parents.
