between Prospero and the native inhabitants of the island, Ariel and Caliban, one can easily discern the Euro-centric attitudes that would later characterize English colonization, which includes the Judeo-Christian attitude
that humanitys activities should strive to dominate and control the natural world. Like Caliban and Ariel, Prospero possesses magic. However, Prosperos magic, unlike that of Caliban, Ariel, or Calibans
deceased mother Sycorax, is intrinsically bound to books, which connects it to the European ideal of literacy, which is a human construct. The magic of the native inhabitants has no
such connection, making it purely a product of nature, their own and that of the environment. Examination of this point demonstrates that Prosperos Euro-centric worldview mirrors the imperialism that was
to follow Shakespeares era. Critical commentary supports this supposition as numerous critics have presented a view of this play that pictures it as "a covert ideological argument in favor of
the European colonizing project of the seventeenth century" (Storhoff 37). Early on in The Tempest, Shakespeare has Prospero inform the audience of his and his daughter Mirandas history prior to
coming to the island, as well as the history of the island prior to European intrusion. Before Prospero came, the island was ruled by Sycorax, a native woman who is
described as a witch, which indicates that she, like Prospero, possessed magic. Sycorax imprisoned the air sprite Ariel in a pine tree. She subsequently died, which left Ariel imprisoned. Prospero
