a story that tells of reconciliation, magic, life and illusion. It is a love story and a story of forgiveness. Bearing these perspectives in mind we present the following paper which examines the theme of illusion and reality, human and supernatural, reconciliation, affirmation of life, and also examines the structure of the story and its climactic elements. Illusion and Reality Interestingly enough, we are presented with what appear to be relatively normal individuals in a relatively real situation. We have a man, Prospero, who has been put upon this island as an exile. We have men who are shipwrecked onto this island. And, throughout the tale we have simple and real events which transpire in a normal manner, such as the love story between Ferdinand and Miranda. From these perspectives we have a normal story that seems to follow a particular pattern. But, there are many elements of deception through the use of magic or illusion. This relatively simple story is complicated and elaborated upon through the presence of Ariel and the magic that Ariel possesses in combination with Prospero. Being stranded on this island it becomes an important part of the story that Prospero would possess some magical qualities, or access to magic. This puts an edge on the story that offers comedy and fantasy. Through this access to the magical illusions we are offered the safety of the men who are shipwrecked, we are offered the ability to see the sensitive and wondrous love that grows between Ferdinand and Miranda, and we are offered a chance at reconciliation. Human and Supernatural As with the elements of the real and the illusory, we are also offered the elements of the human and the supernatural.
