short story from anecdote to art. He virtually created the detective story and perfected the psychological thriller" (Edgar Allan Poe). All of Edgar Alan Poes work is known for its
use of all elements of writing in portraying incredible stories that often haunt the reader. He was skilled in every aspect of writing it seems, especially in relationship to anything
that was slightly obscure or eerie, which are also elements of the writer himself. His story "The Tell Tale Heart" is no exception to these conditions or realities. As one
author notes, "This is, by any definition, an intriguing tale, suggesting symbolic interpretations, but also creating a nightmarish world with a reason of its own" (Dover). The Tell
Tale Heart In "The Tell-Tale Heart," in the opening paragraph, we are immediately provided with images of terror and of introspection that can only come from a man like Poe:
"TRUE! nervous, very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why WILL you say that I am mad?" (Poe NA). The narrator tells us that "The disease had
sharpened my senses, not destroyed, not dulled them. Above all was the sense of hearing acute" arguing that he heard everything (Poe NA). He then states, "Hearken! and observe how
healthily, how calmly, I can tell you the whole story" (Poe NA). The narrator immediately informs us that something horrible and incredibly frightening and insane is soon to be presented.
Despite the seemingly coherent wording, we know, from the start, that there is a madness and a fear, which may not necessarily provide us with a subtle mounting of tension,
