foot is one of the most mistreated parts of the human anatomy. As the lowest extremity, it is it that most often serves as the interface between the human
body and the substrate upon which that body is functioning. Not only is the foot expected to bear the weight of the person, it is also expected to compensate
for the sometimes difficult terrain that person is traversing. We have designed footwear to serve as a form of protection for the foot. The American Podiatric Association (2004)
observes: "From ancient Egyptian times down through the centuries, footwear has been designed to meet
mankinds real and perceived needs-protection, support, comfort, sturdiness, and stylishness" Footwear not only is functional
but it is an important part of human attire (Szpunar, 2004). Consequently, footwear must be fashionable and complimentary to other clothes (Szpunar, 2004). Above all, however, footwear must
serve to: "protect the feet with the highest possible degree of comfort and hygiene. It
has to allow for environmental requirements and for the climate in which it is worn" (Szpunar, 2004).
The earliest varieties of footwear were quite simplistic when compared to our modern versions. Its primary function was that of a separation between the earth
